- 2 slices Cheddar Cheese (Sharp cheddar, sliced)

- 8 pieces Charcoal Briquettes (Approximately one cup, pre‑lit if possible)
- 1 tbsp Vegetable Oil (For brushing patties)
- 2 pieces Burger Buns (Optional, toasted)
Instructions
Gather Ingredients and Equipment
Lay out all ingredients, the sheet pan, wire rack, tongs, spatula, charcoal, and a lighter. Make sure everything is clean and within reach.
Time: PT5M
Light the Charcoal
Using a lighter or matches, ignite the charcoal briquettes in a fire pit or safe metal container. Allow them to turn gray‑ash and glow red, about 10 minutes.
Time: PT10M
Assemble the Makeshift Grill
Place the disposable sheet pan directly on the hot coals. Set the wire rack on top of the pan so the patties will sit above the flames.
Time: PT3M
Form and Season Patties
Divide the ground beef into two equal portions and gently shape each into a ¾‑inch thick patty. Season both sides with salt and black pepper.
Time: PT5M
Oil the Patties
Brush a thin layer of vegetable oil on each side of the patties to reduce sticking on the rack.
Time: PT1M
Cook First Side
Place the patties on the wire rack over the hot coals. Let them sear for 4 minutes without moving.
Time: PT4M
Flip and Add Cheese
Using tongs, flip the patties. Immediately place a slice of cheddar on each patty and continue cooking for another 4 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F and the cheese melts.
Time: PT4M
Temperature: 160°F
Toast Buns (Optional)
Place the burger buns cut‑side down on the rack for about 1 minute, just until lightly toasted.
Time: PT1M
Assemble the Burger
Place each patty on a bun, add any desired condiments, and serve immediately.
Time: PT2M
Extinguish Coals and Clean Up

Time: PT5M
