- Add a knob of butter on the bun while toasting for extra richness
- Serve with homemade fries or coleslaw for a complete meal
Troubleshooting
The steak doesn't form a crust because it isn't pressed enough
Use a sturdy spatula and apply firm pressure immediately after placing in the pan
The bun becomes soggy
Toast the buns until well golden and add the sauce just before serving
The cheese doesn't melt
Lower the heat slightly after flipping and cover the pan for 30 seconds to create steam
Storage
Refrigerator: Cooked steaks keep for 2 days in an airtight container. Buns keep for 3 days at room temperature or 1 week in the refrigerator.
Freezer: Raw steaks can be frozen for 2 months. Buns freeze for 2 months, to be thawed in the oven.
Room temperature: Assembled burgers should be eaten immediately; otherwise they deteriorate in less than 2 hours.
Make-Ahead Tips
- Form the meat balls the day before and keep them in the refrigerator
- Pre‑mix the mayo‑ketchup‑mustard sauce and store it refrigerated for 24 hours
- Toast the buns just before serving to retain crunch
